Come to Jensen Beach to Meet Mulligan’s Mighty VW “Shorty”
Cruising through Jensen with unmistakable flair is Mulligan’s 1964 Volkswagen Transporter Single Cab — a pint-sized powerhouse with a personality as bold as its sunshine-yellow paint job. This isn’t just any vintage VW; it’s a custom “Shorty” pickup that’s been chopped, dropped, and dialed in for maximum charm and street-side smiles.
Originally part of the iconic T1 series, this split-windshield stunner has been lovingly transformed with a shortened wheelbase (just 4 feet!) and a compact rear bed framed by engine-turned aluminum and wooden rails. Chrome accents, quad exhaust outlets, and Spirit of America wheels give it a retro-meets-racer vibe that turns heads wherever it parks.
Inside, it’s all about attitude. Sparco bucket seats with 4-point harnesses, a Scat shifter, and a Lecarra steering wheel wrapped in grey leather make the cabin feel like a vintage rally car. Custom black Line-X panels and Dynamat insulation keep things cool and quiet, while chrome touches and a white-faced VDO fuel gauge add just the right amount of sparkle.
Under the hood, a rebuilt 1600cc air-cooled flat-four engine with a Solex carburetor delivers that classic VW hum, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission for hands-on fun. Recently serviced and garage-kept for the past 20 years, this little legend even earned a spot in the book VW Bus: The First 50 Years — a nod to its place in VW history.
Whether it’s parked outside Mulligan’s or rolling down the coast, this yellow rocket is more than a truck — it’s a rolling slice of joy, nostalgia, and pure Volkswagen magic.
