How To Cook Crab: Tips From Your Favorite Local Seafood Restaurant

In our last post, we took a look at our recommended way of preparing and selecting crab. We offered up some tricks of the trade with regards to choosing live (and active) crab, in addition to getting into some details about the picking process.

We also shone the spotlight on our variety of crab dishes we have on offer at Mulligan’s Beach House Bar & Grill. Among said crab dishes, some of our most popular remain Key West Crab Cakes, King Crab Legs, and Crab Benedict. And with tropical, family-friendly restaurant locations in Lake Worth, Jensen Beach, Vero Beach, and in other locations, you’re never too far away from outstanding fresh seafood.

That being said, we made the point last time (and we’ll make it again) that it’s often not possible for people to come see us at Mulligan’s every time they get a hankering for shellfish. Now, we are an affordable seafood and fish restaurant – don’t get us wrong – but there are simply few people who can afford to eat out so frequently. Our point is that, however much it might pain us to think of you getting your seafood fix somewhere else, your home is certainly the least painful location we can imagine. What’s more, we’d like to carry on with our tip-giving ways so that you can be confident and well-prepared to cook some delicious crab legs, should the mood strike.

Many people can get intimidated by the mere appearance of those foreboding, gigantic Alaskan crab legs. But honestly, it’s not so bad and it doesn’t take too long to get the hang of what you are doing. In today’s post, we’ll take a look at a few different ways you can prepare crab, including steaming, baking, and broiling crab legs. All that said, keep reading if you are interested in gleaning some cooking-method tips from Mulligan’s Beach House Bar & Grill!

Crab Cooking Tips

Before we dive into preparation techniques, let’s start with some prerequisites. Now, if there’s one thing you remember after reading this blog, perhaps it should be that crab should nearly always be eaten on the same day it’s been bought. It’s not vital, per se, as crab meat can keep in the refrigerator for two days. But with each passing day, you’ll be sacrificing quality and taste. Given the fact that eating crab is somewhat of a special treat, we recommend following through and making a day of it! Here are a few other tips about the selection process, just for review:

  • When you buy live crab, it should smell fresh and somewhat briny, but never fishy. It should look clean and vibrant to indicate health as well.
  • Live crabs should be active, so try to avoid crab housed in water, as this exhausts crabs struggling for breath.
  • Crab meat that has been cooked should have no fishy odor or traces of ammonia. The meat itself should be white as snow, predominantly.
  • Be sure to separate cooked crab meat from raw meat, as bacteria can migrate from uncooked to cooked portion.

General Tips

Here are some crab leg-specific tips many find helpful.

  • Consider adding a bit of minced garlic to your melted butter for dipping. You could even brown the garlic in the butter to pull more flavor out of the minced garlic.
  • If you are electing the boiling or baking route, you can use olive oil as a butter replacement. If you are looking to eat healthier, prefer the vegan option, or simply like the taste of olive oil, this could be a good option for you.
  • One pound of crab leg per person should be close to the right amount, depending on the appetites of those in your party.
  • Melted butter is great, especially with garlic, but clarified butter is something else altogether!
  • If the crab legs you’ve purchased are frozen and have red shells, they’ve been pre-cooked. Still, it’s safe to double check with the market attendant to be sure.
  • If you have pre-cooked crab legs, you can eat them cold, should you so desire. Just make sure they’ve thawed first!
  • Alaskan king crab legs almost always come pre-cooked, as they are cooked almost immediately after having been caught. Yes, they are cooked on the boat! Then they are frozen, which helps lock in flavor and freshness. And considering the fact that Florida is a bit of a drive away from Alaska, we here at Mulligan’s consider that a very good thing!
  • In order to defrost crab legs, you can place them in your refrigerator for right around eight hours. Consider placing them in a watertight container so they can drain while they thaw.

Steaming Crab Legs

  • Pour two cups of water in a large pot (or a steamer, if you’ve got one). Add a tablespoon of salt and bring the water to a boil.
  • Enter the crab legs. Place them on a rack in the bottom of the pan or into the steaming basket.
  • Start timing once the water begins to boil again.
  • Steam the crab somewhere between five to seven minutes. A good way to tell they are done is to make sure they are warm while you are able to smell their sweet scent. Again, these legs have been cooked already, so make sure you don’t over do them.
  • Take them off the heat, serve with some delicious melted-garlic butter and lemon wedges for acidity. Delicious!

Baking Or Broiling Crab Legs

  • In order to broil your crab legs, set your oven rack to roughly five inches below the top heating element. Preheat your oven to broil.
  • In order to bake your crab legs, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F with your oven rack in the middle.
  • Soak and rinse the legs. Pat them dry. Cut through the legs on their underside with a sharp pair of scissors. A sharp knife works too.
  • Place them on a baking pan, individually, with the cut-side facing up. Brush with a lemon juice and butter mixture.
  • Broil between three to four minutes. Bake for roughly eight minutes.
  • Enjoy!

In our last post, Tips For Preparing Fish, we took the time to highlight a few of the most common, easy-to-employ methods for preparing fish. Said methods included preparation styles for battered fish and pan-fried fish. We also gave our readers a few pointers in reference to the selection process when it comes to choosing fish from your local supermarket. Likewise, we offered up some wisdom with regards to storage. Generally speaking, however, the rule of thumb unsurprisingly remains that you should always try to cook your fish before freezing it if you are interested in extracting the best flavor possible. As you have found your way to this seafood restaurant blog, we can only assume you fit that description!

In today’s post, we’d like to run with the preparation-tip theme. This time we’ll discuss some of the ways in which you can choose and select crab. As you can tell, we’ve got breakfast items, appetizers, and entrees that feature crab for you to choose from. Each offers something a bit different in terms of inspiration and note, but if we were forced to choose a favorite, we’d have to go with the King Crab Legs. But seeing as you aren’t always going to be able to come see us at Mulligan’s for your crab-fix, we thought we’d share with you some of our industry-knowledge so that you can stay in but still eat some flavorful crab in the comfort of your own home. Keep reading if you are interested in some tips as to how to clean and prepare crab!

Let’s Start With The Selection Process

There are two primary categories of crab meat – picked and whole. Sub-categories of crab meat include lump (as you may have noticed above), which is essentially picked crab, flake, meaning smaller pieces of crab meat, and claw, signifying pieces of meat found in the claw as the name suggests.  

Whole crab meat is sometimes alive, and whenever it’s possible, it’s best to select crab that is still alive for optimal freshness. This isn’t always a realistic possibility, as certain crab are only available during certain times of the year. When choosing a live crab from a market, look for those that have a salty aroma, are alert. It’s best to avoid crabs that smell fishy, look near death, and/or are opaque as opposed to translucent (specifically in regards to soft-shell crabs, we should warrant).

Beyond those general pointers, you should also take notice as to where the crabs are being kept. For example, crabs that are stored in water tanks have to use more energy to survive, and will therefore be less healthy and closer to death than otherwise. If you are in a particularly thorough mood, you can check the crab’s belly for firmness (the more firm the better), in addition to closely inspecting the crab’s claws. Find a crab with well-used claws that have their fair share of battle scars. That means your claw is likely full-grown. That means more delicious meat!

Pre-Dressing Tips

It’s a good idea to keep the following things in mind before you go buy a crab without any of the requisite kitchen tools to make this project easier, and perhaps, possible.

  • Paper towels
  • Tea towels
  • Chopping board
  • Bowls for the brown and white meat
  • A sharp and solid kitchen knife

Make sure you wipe down all the surfaces you used when you are done. Likewise, ensure that your crab is chilled before you prepare. Crab meat can spoil very quickly.

Picking The Meat

Once you’ve selected your perfect crab (or 5!), it’s time to prepare them. Let’s take a step-by-step look at our recommended crab picking technique.

  • Turn the crab so it is facing you, head on.
  • Turn it over and look at its belly
  • Wedge your knife, or your fingers, if you are in something of a savage mood, under the triangle-shaped flap. Pull that sucker back.
  • Pull out the top shell now that you’ve gained some leverage. At this point, you have a decision to make. You can either throw away the top shell and its contents (liver and other organs), or you can set it aside to consume at a later point. Some people like eating the innards, but most find it a barbaric practice. We don’t discriminate here at Mulligan’s. You do you. Whichever route you elect to go with, make sure you remove the stomach sac and hard membranes inside the shell in addition to removing the “dead man’s fingers” (spongy gills).
  • Grab a spoon, roughly the size of a teaspoon to scoop out the delightful, brown meat found. Place it into a bowl and then mash it gently with a fork.  
  • At this point, with the belly still up, slice your crab lengthwise. Or crack it with your hands if the mood strikes.
  • Snap off the legs and claws. If your crab is fresh, it should be a sinch.
  • Crack into the claws. We recommend using a nutcracker for this activity. But, if you’ve been going the savage route of using your hands the entire time, why stop now? Fair warning – it might be a bit of a challenge. Either way, don’t ignore the delicious meat inside the claws. There’s plenty of it and it is certifiably yummy.
  • Congrats, you just broke down your very first crab. You are ready to prepare crab for eating!

Tips For Preparing Fish

There are some good seafood restaurants along the Atlantic coast of Florida. There are some lousy ones, too. It’s difficult to determine which are which, mainly because the bad ones don’t come out and tell you that they aren’t concerned with the quality of their service or product. That’s why it’s helpful to do some online research on Google Reviews, Yelp, Urban Spoon, and the like before heading to the first restaurant that pops up after you type “seafood restaurant near me” into your smartphone.

Word of mouth is a great way to figure out how to separate the pretenders from those who care about pleasing their customers with top-shelf seafood, like we do here at Mulligan’s Beach House and Grill. But if you aren’t a local, perhaps you are on vacation or just happen to be passing through the area and are in the mood for some delectable fish tacos and the like, who are you going to ask? That’s why we’ve made this space here at Mulligan’s; we want people who are looking for local seafood restaurants to be able to find us on search engines. In today’s post, we wanted to provide you with some simple, easy-to-remember tips for preparing fish. We understand that most people aren’t able to eat out at a seafood restaurant every time they want some fish, and with that in mind, keep reading if you are interested in picking up some tips provided to you by Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill!

Selecting The Right Filet

Let’s start at the beginning, with selecting the right filet. As we are fans of all kinds of fish, we recommend you not head to your local supermarket with too specific intentions. That is, if they don’t have salmon (or fresh salmon), be open to a different kind of fish. All you need is a bit of salt, pepper, and perhaps some fresh herbs and lemon to bring out the natural flavor of any kind of fish. Of course, there are plenty of recipes that have fancy sauces and preparation methods, but selecting a quality filet is the essential precursor to any delicious home-cooked fish dish.

The fact of the matter is that similar types of fish are easily exchanged for one another, so don’t get hung up on a single kind. Look for a filet that doesn’t have water pooled around it. Don’t feel the need to avoid whole fish, either. All you have to do is simply ask the attendant to “dress” the fish for you, which entails removing the guts, head, and other undesirable parts of your selection.

Just make sure the fish you are selecting smells more like the sea than that “fishy” smell. Another thing to look out for is if the fish filet you have in mind is soft. That is bad. You want it to be firm. Feel free to ask the attendant what their recommendation is, too.

Storage

Storage also plays a key role in the end result. If you aren’t planning on eating the purchased fish on that same day, you want to make sure to keep it chilled in the coldest part of your refrigerator. On that day, take it out a few hours before you plan to cook it. Then run it over cool water and pat it dry to make sure scales and whatnot fall off. Then put it on a plate, uncovered, and leave it in your refrigerator until it is time to go.

Pan Frying Your Fish

If you elect to pan fry your fish, all you need is some oil, butter, salt, pepper, flour, and whichever spices you prefer. Simply dust the filets with your combination of salt, pepper, flour, and spices, and dip them in the heated butter and oil. The butter is for flavor and the oil is to make sure the butter doesn’t burn. And while we aren’t providing our readers with a specific recipe in today’s post, a good rule for frying time is 7-10 minutes per inch of thickness. So, for a thin fillet, you are looking at 3-4 minutes of frying time.

Battered Fish

Everybody likes fish and chips, but it can be quite the challenge to duplicate the kind of deliciousness you might find at a top restaurant like Mulligan’s. Here’s a “life hack” for you; instead of using milk or regular water in your recipe, replace it with beer or even soda water. You want to make sure that the batter you use is ice-cold when you dip your fish in it. Ideally, your batter should be golden brown within 60 seconds. The key is to make sure your batter doesn’t soak through to make your fish soggy.

We have visited this restaurant twice in the last month and absolutely love it! Tonight I had the monster fish and chips and it was the best I’ve had outside of the UK. Interesting Tidbits About Disney World And Universal Studios Florida

  • Florida is at sea level. While that might not qualify as “interesting”, it is a useful pre-fact, if you will. Disney World’s Magic Kingdom has a little-known tunnel system which is used by park employees to get around quickly and discreetly. These underground tunnels, interestingly enough, are actually on sea level. The park is built on top of this ground level, in a coincidental homage to modern Rome.
  • This one might surprise you a little bit. If you go to the Magic Kingdom, you might be surprised to see some ash flying around. No, it’s probably not from a nearby controlled burn. It’s more likely from a deceased person’s remains. People just like to be left where they remember being happy, we suppose. Oddly enough, this happens so much that the park has its own vacuum to take care of this occurrence.
  • Walt Disney World Resort proper is just about as large as the city limits of San Francisco. However, only 35 percent of the resort’s grounds have been developed. The Animal Kingdom alone is over 400 acres in size. It makes sense that it is the resort’s biggest theme park.
  • Speaking of the Animal Kingdom, there are over 3,000 species of animals in its some 4,000,000 plants and trees. What a habitat!
  • Every day, a random family is chosen to be able to stay at the very top of Cinderella’s castle in the Magic Kingdom. The apartment was intended to be used for Walt Disney and his family.
  • The “Land” pavilion at Epcot Center is used for the growing of some 30 tons of food used by Epcot Center’s many restaurants in addition to being a mildly entertaining exhibit!
  • Speaking of Epcot, do you know why it is named what it is named? “Epcot” stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. With the dawn of the internet and all that comes with it, we are not sure the powers-that-be understood how daunting of a task keeping this park “futuristic” would actually become.
  • Walt Disney World was originally planned to be built in St. Louis, Missouri. The blueprint showed that the plan was to have the park be categorically indoors because of the cold winter months.

  • Disney World purchases more fireworks than any other entity in the U.S. save the nation’s military itself. We aren’t sure why the military is using fireworks, though.
  • Gators want to experience the most magical place on earth, too. Some have even been known to join in the fun by taking a dip in Splash Mountain’s pool. The whole park is built on a swamp, after all.
  • There’s a small, half-court basketball court on the top of Matterhorn Mountain. Perhaps you’ve seen the employees repelling down the mountain in their themed costumes. One of them reportedly got bored and brought the fixins’ to build a court up there to help pass the down time.
  • Shifting gears a bit, you can check out an actual piece of the Berlin Wall at Universal Studios near the Blue Man Group entrance. It’s in a garden behind the Hard Rock Cafe, and isn’t something you get to see or touch every day!
  • If you’ve been on The Rip Ride Rockit, you probably noticed that each seat comes complete with a touchscreen you can use to select music to enjoy while you nearly soil yourself during the ascent. But what you might be less familiar with is the fact that you can select a wide array of hidden songs if you hold down the logo on the top of the screen for around 10 seconds. Interesting And Crazy Florida Facts

Whether you are a true native Floridian or are visiting someone and just happen to be looking for “seafood restaurants near me” on your smartphone, we hope that you find these tidbits as interesting as we did. Maybe you can even read some of them aloud while you are chowing down on some Calypso Crab Cake or Sesame Tuna. Yum! Okay, we should probably get to the facts. Can you tell we are hungry for seafood?

  • You know those famous Florida flamingos? They get their pinkish hue from eating shrimp. The more shrimp they eat, the more pink they become. We wonder if that’s the case with humans, too. There’s only one way to find out…
  • A man by the name of Stephen Foster wrote our state’s song, “Old Folks at Home”, also called “Swanee River”.  Known as a minstrel song, Foster never actually saw the Suwannee River which was addressed in the tune. He chose the river for the fact that it flowed well with the rest of the tune. And no, the aforementioned “old folks” isn’t an homage to our sizable elderly community. In actual fact it references Foster’s nostalgia for his hypothetical upbringing along the Suwannee River. A final fun fact about this song is that Foster’s original lyrics were expurgated in 2008 due to their offensive content.
  • The Florida Everglades are home to 36 threatened or endangered species. The Everglades have over 350 species of birds and 300 species of fish living within the 1.5 million acres that comprises the region.
  • If you go visit the Everglades, keep in mind a few things. First, bring your mosquito repellant. Although it isn’t very fun for humans who are visiting to experience, mosquitos play an integral role in the Everglade’s ecosystem. Mosquito larva serves as food for hundreds of fish that wouldn’t call Florida their home otherwise. The second warning is to look out for Sawgrass plants. They grow up to six feet in height and can be so sharp that they can cut through clothing! Yikes.
  • Our final fun fact(s) about the Everglades is that it is the only place in the world where crocs and gators coexist. Oh, and lest we forget, one out of every three Floridians get there water from the Everglades.
  • The Florida Keys are remarkable biodiverse. The coral reefs coupled with natural forests make it home to myriad species.
  • One of those species is the Loggerhead turtle. Interestingly enough, there is nowhere in the country that has more turtle nesting areas than the Florida Keys.
  • If you are into pirates and shipwrecks, the Upper Keys have some awesome historical shipwrecks which you can check out on your trip to Florida. Choose from WWII freighters to much older Spanish ships.
  • The Spanish were the first Europeans to discover the Florida Keys. Because of their twisted layout, the Spanish explorers named the archipelago “Los Martires”, which translates to “the martyrs”.
  • In 1812, the entire modern state of Florida, including the Keys, officially became part of the United States of America.

  • Although Key West is technically the southernmost point within the continental U.S., Hawaii is further south than any part of Florida.
  • Shifting gears, Gatorade was named after the University of Florida Gators, which was where the cutting-edge hydrating beverage was first formulated.
  • The Flora-Bama Beach Bar in Pensacola hosts a curious annual event. The Mullet Toss involves thousands of Florida locals standing at the Florida-Alabama state line where they throw dead fish into Alabama. As founders of some of the top seafood restaurants around, we think there are much better uses for fish than this.
  • No matter where you are in the state of Florida, you are guaranteed to be more than 60 miles away from an ocean. That’s part of what makes this state so dang great.
  • Unmarried women are not legally allowed to parachute on Sundays in Florida. We can’t say that this is part of what makes this state so dang great. But it is strange.
  • In the same vein as the above fact, it’s illegal for anyone to sing in public while wearing swim trunks. It’s also illegal to skateboard without a license within Florida. What’s more, women can be fined for falling asleep under a hair dryer, as can salon owners for the same occurrence.
  • Don’t try to get away with parking your elephant for free in public within our great state. You have to pay the parking free just like you would with an automobile, according to state law.
  • Here’s a couple of state laws that make slightly more sense. It’s illegal to sell your children in Florida. Also, Florida highway patrol officers who are adjudged to be 15 lbs overweight will lose their bonuses.

Fast Florida Facts

  • Florida is bigger than you might think. In fact, it’s over 15,000 square miles bigger than England.
  • If you run a state-funded daycare center, you are legally obligated to play classical music for your children. A 1998 Florida law requires it. Then state senator Bill Turner said, “I want all the kids in the state of Florida to be the best and brightest.” And although his rather rudimentary hypothesis has been falsified, the law remains. There’s some governmental efficiency for ya!
  • Florida is also the only state (that we know of) with two rivers that have the exact same name. The Withlacoochee River(s) exist in Madison County and in Central Florida. Of course, these rivers were named in the days prior to the internet (remember those?), so it might just be down to random chance that the rivers were coincidentally given the same name. Another theory is that, in early Florida days, there was one person tasked with coming up with the names of every Florida river. Given the scope of such a task, it’s plausible that such a public servant could have made a mistake and used the same name twice. Sadly, we will never know the real reason…
  • Florida, or at least, its waters, are home to a “space station of the sea”. This is an underwater, permanent lab just 3.5 miles away from the Florida Keys. We don’t recommend looking into becoming a researcher there if you aren’t keen on small spaces.
  • Florida is home to over 700 rhesus monkeys. These monkeys are not to be trifled with, either. This isn’t because they are particularly aggressive, but it more has to do with that many of them are said to have herpes-B. An infected, wild monkey could easily infect you. And that won’t bode well for anyone. In fact, it’s quite possible you’d die. So just stay away.
  • 66 million humans took a visit to Orlando. That is more than any other city in the world. And between Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld, great nightlife, shopping, and golfing, it’s pretty easy to see why.

  • Florida is now home to a not-so-fun kind of slug: the giant African land snail. These snails can carry a parasitic rat lungworm. If this parasite is somehow transmitted to humans, it can lead to contracting meningitis, which isn’t fun. How did they get to our beautiful sunshine state? People who practice Ifa Orisha, a cult originating from Africa, are instructed to drink “juice” from the snail. Seeing as how good Florida parents are said to teach their kids two main lessons before all else (don’t join cults, and don’t drink snail juice), we are somewhat surprised to hear of how this practice has caught on. The good news is that the state is currently doing their best to eliminate the snails.
  • Before the recent boom of tourism, the biggest industries in Central Florida were citrus, cattle, and cotton.
  • The original rides at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando included Pirates of the Caribbean, the Mark Twain Riverboat, It’s a Small World, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Mad Tea Party, the Country Bear Jamboree, and the Carousel of Progress. Amazingly, all of these rides are still around today!

Seafood And Sea Life Facts

But in all honesty, as much as we enjoy talking about our “fish restaurant near me” as you may have searched on your smartphone to find this page, that’s not what this promised blog topic is about! It’s about little-known facts about seafood, and by golly, that’s what our readers are going to get. If you are interested in learning some facts that might impress (or weird out) your friends, read on!

Sidenote: we recommend you bring some of these tidbits up at random, perhaps interrupting a good friend while they are telling you about their day. Consider yelling these tips at them, too, for an added shock-value. Feel free to make it your own, too.

  • The US Department of Health says that you should eat a minimum of two servings (455 grams, or 1 lb) of seafood per week. Here at our local seafood restaurant, we couldn’t agree more.
  • Yellow Fin Tuna, or Ahi Tuna, can weigh all the way up to 300 lbs! That’s 175 kilograms of delicious Yellow Fin Tuna. Of course, we go through our tuna fairly quickly here at Mulligan’s, so one of these catches might last us through a single evening…maybe.
  • Seafood, and fish in particular, is a significant source of nutrition and protein for over a billion people across the globe. In developing countries, this is especially the case. Fish farming is becoming an increasingly profitable business in nations such as ours, in part because the public has started to recognize the health benefits of getting their daily protein intake from fish sources.
  • Our oceans are becoming more acidic than ever before. Indirect causes stemming from climate change have caused accelerated warming in areas that fish call home. The increased warmth of the earth in turn warms oceans, which increases the acidic quotient, or acidification rates. Former President Barack Obama cited acidification as a primary concern related to global warming in an Executive Order he issued in 2013. So while this is not a novel concept, it is one of which to be aware.
  • 8 percent of fish that have been caught are thrown back into the sea, worldwide. While the intention might be good, too often these fish are either damaged, dead, or dying.
  • Tuna bones have a value that is truly exceptional. They can be used for fish powder that has the capacity to enrich typical diets with omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium, and zinc.
  • We, as humans, tend to dramatically undervalue certain parts of fish. Among these under-utilized regions are backbones, viscera, and the head, which make up anywhere between 30 and 70 percent of fish. These areas happen to be especially high in micronutrients. If you have the stomach for it, we say go for it! But here at Mulligan’s we’ll stick to grilling up the fish parts you have grown more accustomed to.
  • The African lungfish is a remarkable creature. Initially, the lungfish was wrongly classified as a reptile; the African lungfish is in fact an amphibian. Wondrously, they have the ability to trap themselves in a mud tunnel if they sense their lake is going to dry up. In this mud tunnel they can live for years and years, waiting until the rains return. Try shouting the above factoid over a lovely seafood dinner at Mulligan’s, and see how our friendly staff reacts! (fair warning: they’ll have no context for what you are saying). That just sounds like a worthwhile social experiment to us.

  • “Finding Nemo”, the incredible Pixar film, is a ruse. That’s right, you heard it here first. Why? Anemone fishes, the kind of fish that Nemo and his father are, have a unique aspect to their species. Only the two largest fish sexually mature. The largest is always the female and the runner-up is always male. But here’s the kicker: when the female dies, the male then changes sex to female, with the next-man-up mentality of the National Football League taking effect in mother-nature, as the next-biggest fish matures to become male. Of course, the entire movie is rife with anthropomorphization. And by that logic, it could be argued that Nemo’s dad was in denial about his mate’s death, whereby he became unable to change sexes. So perhaps it isn’t a ruse after all. Maybe it’s just a setup. Can you say “Nemo Trilogy”? We can. We got your back, Pixar.
  • Fish have evolved to have incredibly intricate shades and patterns to protect them from predators. Although there is a rich diversity in this conversation, most all fish are countershaded. That is to say that they are darker on their tops, growing to be gradually lighter or more silver on their bellies and sides. This serves a pragmatic purpose, as most evolution does. Whether they are seen from above or below, their aim is to make it difficult to be seen.
  • Scallops are remarkable creatures and there are a plethora of fun facts we could share with you about them, but we will try to limit ourselves to only the best tidbits for our readers. For starters (not appetizers), scallops have around 60 eyes that circumvent their mantle. Their eyes help them detect motion, dark, and light. Scallops get their energy by consuming small organisms in the water. But instead of actively hunting for these creatures, they take a filter-feeding approach. Their mucus traps plankton in the water. The last scallop fact we will hit you with today is that Atlantic sea scallops have massive shells! Some of these scallops grow to be 9 inches in size!
  • Seafood products, a vast category, are some of the most widely traded food commodities in the world. The total annual amount traded is in the range of $150 billion. Japan consumes the most seafood in the world, with Spain coming in at number 2.
  • Menhaden fish have a long history with the U.S. Not only is it one of the nation’s most important fishes, but it is today used for a variety of purposes. Among them are being used for feed in dog, cat, and pig food, health supplements, insecticides, paints, margarine, soap, cosmetic protects, and more. But before that, Native Americans taught some of the first European settlers to come to North America to plant Menhaden fish with their corn.
  • Hagfishes are also known as slime hags or slime eels. Slime eels have been aptly named, as evidenced by their ability to produce copious amounts of mucus if sufficiently disturbed. Nicknamed the “skunk of the sea” by some (not really), a slime eel can produce more than two gallons of slime in just a few minutes, should they think they are in enough danger. This slime makes them pretty much inedible, so we don’t recommend trying to catch one for dinner. And fear not, we don’t serve hagfish at our local tropical restaurants!

Community Involvement

We are so proud to announce that Mulligan’s has donated a minimum total of $309,000 when all of our charitable financial donations are tallied together. Take a look at a few of the many organizations we are so proud to play a part in serving.  

Angel’s Pediatric Heart House

A nonprofit serving the South Florida area, this organization filled an important void within the community as they provide a place where families who have dealt with loss (specifically related to Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) or childhood acquired heart disease) can have an outlet where they  provide each other with emotional support the year round. Their vision is to be a “leader in the community by helping to alleviate the hardships and challenges of families affected by CHD and create a public awareness of congenital heart defects as the most common birth defect.”

Dogs For Life

Dog For Life, Inc. in Vero Beach was founded to help make the quality of life for people and dogs better. They do this by training service dogs for veterans and by operating an off-leash dog park in the area. Since 2001, they’ve been helping veterans with PTS, hearing, and mobility challenges find a way to deal with these hindrances. Their latest program affords veterans the chance to help and train service dog teams. You can learn more about volunteer opportunities here!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach & Martin Counties, Inc.

This non-profit’s mission is to “Provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” We are proud to report that participants of this program are 46 percent less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27 percent less likely to begin using alcohol, and 52 percent less likely to skip school. This measurable impact speaks volumes to the care and effort that can be found at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach & Martin Counties, Inc.

Junior Achievement of South Florida

JA of South Florida gives young people the opportunity and skills they need to achieve success. Founded in 1959 by the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club, JA’s educational focus has three main components: financial literacy, workplace readiness, and entrepreneurship. In the 2014-15 school year, Junior Achievement programs reach well over 48,000 Broward and South Palm Beach County students! Shrimp & Spinach Omelete

One of our most popular breakfast options here at Mulligan’s is our Shrimp & Spinach Omelete. With tomatoes, spinach, and fresh shrimp, it’s hard to go wrong selecting this well-balanced selection.

Crab & Sausage Omelete

Our other omelette choice that includes seafood is our Crab & Sausage Omelete. It’s not a traditional combination, but most everyone who tries the blend of cheddar cheese, sausage, and lump crab meat has rave reviews about the flavor. Throw in a little ketchup or hot sauce, and it’s tough to say no to.

Crab Benedict

While we are talking about crab and breakfast, we should at least mention our crab benedict. We take that same delicious, fresh, jumbo crab meat and put it into our classic benedict foundation. Make sure you try our Fried Chicken Benedict, if you are in the mood, because it’s topped with Country Sausage Gravy!

Firecracker Shrimp

Do you love shrimp with a little extra kick to it? The extra spice that this breaded shrimp appetizer comes with makes it worth trying, and maybe ordering again and again.

Key West Conch Fritters

If you’ve never had tender queen conch in a delectable herb batter, we don’t know what to tell you. Actually, that is a lie, we do. We should tell you, “Get your behind over to Mulligan’s and try out our Key West Conch Fritters this instant!” They’re fried to a golden brown and come with our signature Cajun Remoulade.

Seafood Trio

The Seafood Trio is the holy trinity of our seafood appetizers, if there is such a thing. Everyone gets something they’ll love, but to be fair, most people love all three options. You’ll get the Mahi Fingers, Firecracker Shrimp, and Conch Fritters. Those are three dynamite options that balance together quite nicely.

Fried Mahi Racheal

Have you ever heard of the Reuben sandwich’s sister, the Rachael sandwich? Usually, it means substituting sauerkraut for coleslaw, which we do here. It can also mean subbing corned beef for turkey or pastrami. In this case, you can try Fried Mahi in our house blend of special seasonings, complete with grilled rye bread and swiss cheese, coleslaw, and thousand island dressings.

Crispy Tuna Roll

One of our in-house favorites, the Crispy Tuna Roll comes as a Fried Thai-ginger wrap with Ahi Tuna and vegetables. In true Ahi Tuna fashion, it comes served rare with an Asian slaw and wasabi cream to give it a little bit of kick.

Fried Seafood Platter

The Fried Seafood Platter is an awesome option if you want to bring the whole fried gang together to play. Get fried fish, shrimp strips, clam strips, and slaw and french fries. You could probably split this choice with a friend or two, or save it for leftovers!

Crabby Grouper

Get a succulent fresh grouper filet that comes with our specialty lobster sauce. If that isn’t enough seafood decadence for you, it comes with an incredible crab cake on the side.

Florida Grouper

The fresh Florida Grouper dish comes either grilled or blackened, it’s your choice. Over the top comes our house-made Pineapple Salsa to give it a sweet note.

Key West Crab Cakes

Who doesn’t love crab cakes, especially when they are made with freshly caught crab? You’ll get two homemade lump crab cakes, complete with delicious hollandaise sauce.

King Crab Legs

Consider yourself to be regal? Do you love tasty crab and plenty of it? Get 1 pound of Alaskan Red King Crab Legs and eat until your heart’s content!

Mulligan’s Mango Mahi

We take our Tropical Mango Salsa and pour it over the top of our fresh Mahi Mahi. It comes either grilled or blackened, but either way, it’s excellent!

Sunrise Salmon

Who doesn’t love a little breakfast flavor for dinner? Okay, most people aren’t always in the mood for steak and eggs or waffles in the evening. But should the mood for a seafood-themed breakfast strike, try our Grilled Salmon topped with rich hollandaise sauce.

Blackened Seared Tuna

We take our rare Ahi Tuna and give it a light sear, making sure it is blackened enough to give a balance of flavor. Ask your server for more details on how this seafood dish is prepared.

Jamaican Shrimp

Sweet pineapple salsa combines perfectly with our Jerk Jumbo Shrimp Skewers. You might need to order a round of them for the whole table if you let people taste them, so consider yourself warned!

Coconut Shrimp

When you think of breaded, coconut shrimp, you should probably think of Mulligan’s as well. The shrimp are jumbo and have the perfect amount of breading coating the outside. This is a classic, and getting it from Mulligan’s Beach House takes it up another notch.
