Seafood And Sea Life Facts

But in all honesty, as much as we enjoy talking about our “fish restaurant near me” as you may have searched on your smartphone to find this page, that’s not what this promised blog topic is about! It’s about little-known facts about seafood, and by golly, that’s what our readers are going to get. If you are interested in learning some facts that might impress (or weird out) your friends, read on!

Sidenote: we recommend you bring some of these tidbits up at random, perhaps interrupting a good friend while they are telling you about their day. Consider yelling these tips at them, too, for an added shock-value. Feel free to make it your own, too.

  • The US Department of Health says that you should eat a minimum of two servings (455 grams, or 1 lb) of seafood per week. Here at our local seafood restaurant, we couldn’t agree more.
  • Yellow Fin Tuna, or Ahi Tuna, can weigh all the way up to 300 lbs! That’s 175 kilograms of delicious Yellow Fin Tuna. Of course, we go through our tuna fairly quickly here at Mulligan’s, so one of these catches might last us through a single evening…maybe.
  • Seafood, and fish in particular, is a significant source of nutrition and protein for over a billion people across the globe. In developing countries, this is especially the case. Fish farming is becoming an increasingly profitable business in nations such as ours, in part because the public has started to recognize the health benefits of getting their daily protein intake from fish sources.
  • Our oceans are becoming more acidic than ever before. Indirect causes stemming from climate change have caused accelerated warming in areas that fish call home. The increased warmth of the earth in turn warms oceans, which increases the acidic quotient, or acidification rates. Former President Barack Obama cited acidification as a primary concern related to global warming in an Executive Order he issued in 2013. So while this is not a novel concept, it is one of which to be aware.
  • 8 percent of fish that have been caught are thrown back into the sea, worldwide. While the intention might be good, too often these fish are either damaged, dead, or dying.
  • Tuna bones have a value that is truly exceptional. They can be used for fish powder that has the capacity to enrich typical diets with omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium, and zinc.
  • We, as humans, tend to dramatically undervalue certain parts of fish. Among these under-utilized regions are backbones, viscera, and the head, which make up anywhere between 30 and 70 percent of fish. These areas happen to be especially high in micronutrients. If you have the stomach for it, we say go for it! But here at Mulligan’s we’ll stick to grilling up the fish parts you have grown more accustomed to.
  • The African lungfish is a remarkable creature. Initially, the lungfish was wrongly classified as a reptile; the African lungfish is in fact an amphibian. Wondrously, they have the ability to trap themselves in a mud tunnel if they sense their lake is going to dry up. In this mud tunnel they can live for years and years, waiting until the rains return. Try shouting the above factoid over a lovely seafood dinner at Mulligan’s, and see how our friendly staff reacts! (fair warning: they’ll have no context for what you are saying). That just sounds like a worthwhile social experiment to us.

  • “Finding Nemo”, the incredible Pixar film, is a ruse. That’s right, you heard it here first. Why? Anemone fishes, the kind of fish that Nemo and his father are, have a unique aspect to their species. Only the two largest fish sexually mature. The largest is always the female and the runner-up is always male. But here’s the kicker: when the female dies, the male then changes sex to female, with the next-man-up mentality of the National Football League taking effect in mother-nature, as the next-biggest fish matures to become male. Of course, the entire movie is rife with anthropomorphization. And by that logic, it could be argued that Nemo’s dad was in denial about his mate’s death, whereby he became unable to change sexes. So perhaps it isn’t a ruse after all. Maybe it’s just a setup. Can you say “Nemo Trilogy”? We can. We got your back, Pixar.
  • Fish have evolved to have incredibly intricate shades and patterns to protect them from predators. Although there is a rich diversity in this conversation, most all fish are countershaded. That is to say that they are darker on their tops, growing to be gradually lighter or more silver on their bellies and sides. This serves a pragmatic purpose, as most evolution does. Whether they are seen from above or below, their aim is to make it difficult to be seen.
  • Scallops are remarkable creatures and there are a plethora of fun facts we could share with you about them, but we will try to limit ourselves to only the best tidbits for our readers. For starters (not appetizers), scallops have around 60 eyes that circumvent their mantle. Their eyes help them detect motion, dark, and light. Scallops get their energy by consuming small organisms in the water. But instead of actively hunting for these creatures, they take a filter-feeding approach. Their mucus traps plankton in the water. The last scallop fact we will hit you with today is that Atlantic sea scallops have massive shells! Some of these scallops grow to be 9 inches in size!
  • Seafood products, a vast category, are some of the most widely traded food commodities in the world. The total annual amount traded is in the range of $150 billion. Japan consumes the most seafood in the world, with Spain coming in at number 2.
  • Menhaden fish have a long history with the U.S. Not only is it one of the nation’s most important fishes, but it is today used for a variety of purposes. Among them are being used for feed in dog, cat, and pig food, health supplements, insecticides, paints, margarine, soap, cosmetic protects, and more. But before that, Native Americans taught some of the first European settlers to come to North America to plant Menhaden fish with their corn.
  • Hagfishes are also known as slime hags or slime eels. Slime eels have been aptly named, as evidenced by their ability to produce copious amounts of mucus if sufficiently disturbed. Nicknamed the “skunk of the sea” by some (not really), a slime eel can produce more than two gallons of slime in just a few minutes, should they think they are in enough danger. This slime makes them pretty much inedible, so we don’t recommend trying to catch one for dinner. And fear not, we don’t serve hagfish at our local tropical restaurants!

Jensen Beach Restaurants: Highlighting Our Charitable Involvement

In recent posts, we’ve been taking closer looks at our menu. We’ve had a few different pieces, each highlighting features of our menu. From our breakfast and appetizer selections, our “landfood” choices, to our our classic seafood dishes, there is a lot to choose from for any meal at Mulligan’s.

We were founded in 1997 by George Hart. With six locations being Vero Beach, Jensen Beach, Lake Worth, Lauderdale by the Sea, Sebastian, and Stuart, complemented by an assortment of waterfront views, we have become one of the region’s top choices for a full-service, family-oriented seafood restaurant. We are open for breakfast 365 days a year, and host everything from birthday parties for locals and business parties to the tourist looking for some fresh seafood and a Happy-Hour beverage. If you are looking for a kid-friendly restaurant with top-notch seafood, look no further than Mulligan’s Beach House Bar & Grill!

Today’s post is going to depart from our recent trend of featuring menu items to talk about a different side of Mulligan’s, our community involvement.

Community Involvement

We are so proud to announce that Mulligan’s has donated a minimum total of $309,000 when all of our charitable financial donations are tallied together. Take a look at a few of the many organizations we are so proud to play a part in serving.

Angel’s Pediatric Heart House

A nonprofit serving the South Florida area, this organization filled an important void within the community as they provide a place where families who have dealt with loss (specifically related to Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) or childhood acquired heart disease) can have an outlet where they  provide each other with emotional support the year round. Their vision is to be a “leader in the community by helping to alleviate the hardships and challenges of families affected by CHD and create a public awareness of congenital heart defects as the most common birth defect.”

Dogs For Life

Dog For Life, Inc. in Vero Beach was founded to help make the quality of life for people and dogs better. They do this by training service dogs for veterans and by operating an off-leash dog park in the area. Since 2001, they’ve been helping veterans with PTS, hearing, and mobility challenges find a way to deal with these hindrances. Their latest program affords veterans the chance to help and train service dog teams. You can learn more about volunteer opportunities here!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach & Martin Counties, Inc.

This non-profit’s mission is to “Provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” We are proud to report that participants of this program are 46 percent less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27 percent less likely to begin using alcohol, and 52 percent less likely to skip school. This measurable impact speaks volumes to the care and effort that can be found at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach & Martin Counties, Inc.

Junior Achievement of South Florida

JA of South Florida gives young people the opportunity and skills they need to achieve success. Founded in 1959 by the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club, JA’s educational focus has three main components: financial literacy, workplace readiness, and entrepreneurship. In the 2014-15 school year, Junior Achievement programs reach well over 48,000 Broward and South Palm Beach County students! We are happy to be able to partner with Junior Achievement of South Florida because of the honesty, passion, and integrity that they both model and instill within the young people of our community. If you are interested in volunteering, check out this page.

Whole Child Connection

Based in Martin County FL, Whole Child Connection is a web-based system which provides families in Martin County anonymous and free access to community services for kids and families. They excel in analyzing an individual family’s’ needs so they can match them with the correct services, which include economics, education, health, and spiritual and social well-being. Check out Martin County’s lineup of programs here.

Our Seafood Menu

Below you will find a few of our favorite seafood menu items, most of which are dinner entrees. But not all of them are! Keep reading to learn more about some of the best fresh seafood you will find in all of Florida.

Monster Fish & Chips

You can’t tie down fish and chips to any one time of the day. While it might not be a great breakfast dish, you can’t go wrong with fish and chips for lunch, dinner, or maybe even a night cap.

Lox & Bagel

Speaking of fish and breakfast combining, here is a classic way to do just that. Smoked salmon with capers and cream cheese is a hearty way to start the day off right. Come see us for a business brunch during the week, or wake up even later on the weekend. You’ll still be able to get Mulligan’s delicious Lox & Bagel!

Shrimp & Spinach Omelete

One of our most popular breakfast options here at Mulligan’s is our Shrimp & Spinach Omelete. With tomatoes, spinach, and fresh shrimp, it’s hard to go wrong selecting this well-balanced selection.

Crab & Sausage Omelete

Our other omelette choice that includes seafood is our Crab & Sausage Omelete. It’s not a traditional combination, but most everyone who tries the blend of cheddar cheese, sausage, and lump crab meat has rave reviews about the flavor. Throw in a little ketchup or hot sauce, and it’s tough to say no to.

Crab Benedict

While we are talking about crab and breakfast, we should at least mention our crab benedict. We take that same delicious, fresh, jumbo crab meat and put it into our classic benedict foundation. Make sure you try our Fried Chicken Benedict, if you are in the mood, because it’s topped with Country Sausage Gravy!

Firecracker Shrimp

Do you love shrimp with a little extra kick to it? The extra spice that this breaded shrimp appetizer comes with makes it worth trying, and maybe ordering again and again.

Key West Conch Fritters

If you’ve never had tender queen conch in a delectable herb batter, we don’t know what to tell you. Actually, that is a lie, we do. We should tell you, “Get your behind over to Mulligan’s and try out our Key West Conch Fritters this instant!” They’re fried to a golden brown and come with our signature Cajun Remoulade.

Seafood Trio

The Seafood Trio is the holy trinity of our seafood appetizers, if there is such a thing. Everyone gets something they’ll love, but to be fair, most people love all three options. You’ll get the Mahi Fingers, Firecracker Shrimp, and Conch Fritters. Those are three dynamite options that balance together quite nicely.

Fried Mahi Racheal

Have you ever heard of the Reuben sandwich’s sister, the Rachael sandwich? Usually, it means substituting sauerkraut for coleslaw, which we do here. It can also mean subbing corned beef for turkey or pastrami. In this case, you can try Fried Mahi in our house blend of special seasonings, complete with grilled rye bread and swiss cheese, coleslaw, and thousand island dressings.

Crispy Tuna Roll

One of our in-house favorites, the Crispy Tuna Roll comes as a Fried Thai-ginger wrap with Ahi Tuna and vegetables. In true Ahi Tuna fashion, it comes served rare with an Asian slaw and wasabi cream to give it a little bit of kick.

Fried Seafood Platter

The Fried Seafood Platter is an awesome option if you want to bring the whole fried gang together to play. Get fried fish, shrimp strips, clam strips, and slaw and french fries. You could probably split this choice with a friend or two, or save it for leftovers!

Fresh Seafood Entrees

Crabby Grouper

Get a succulent fresh grouper filet that comes with our specialty lobster sauce. If that isn’t enough seafood decadence for you, it comes with an incredible crab cake on the side.

Florida Grouper

The fresh Florida Grouper dish comes either grilled or blackened, it’s your choice. Over the top comes our house-made Pineapple Salsa to give it a sweet note.

Key West Crab Cakes

Who doesn’t love crab cakes, especially when they are made with freshly caught crab? You’ll get two homemade lump crab cakes, complete with delicious hollandaise sauce.

King Crab Legs

Consider yourself to be regal? Do you love tasty crab and plenty of it? Get 1 pound of Alaskan Red King Crab Legs and eat until your heart’s content!

Mulligan’s Mango Mahi

We take our Tropical Mango Salsa and pour it over the top of our fresh Mahi Mahi. It comes either grilled or blackened, but either way, it’s excellent!

Sunrise Salmon

Who doesn’t love a little breakfast flavor for dinner? Okay, most people aren’t always in the mood for steak and eggs or waffles in the evening. But should the mood for a seafood-themed breakfast strike, try our Grilled Salmon topped with rich hollandaise sauce.

Blackened Seared Tuna

We take our rare Ahi Tuna and give it a light sear, making sure it is blackened enough to give a balance of flavor. Ask your server for more details on how this seafood dish is prepared.

Jamaican Shrimp

Sweet pineapple salsa combines perfectly with our Jerk Jumbo Shrimp Skewers. You might need to order a round of them for the whole table if you let people taste them, so consider yourself warned!

Coconut Shrimp

When you think of breaded, coconut shrimp, you should probably think of Mulligan’s as well. The shrimp are jumbo and have the perfect amount of breading coating the outside. This is a classic, and getting it from Mulligan’s Beach House takes it up another notch.

Stop By Mulligan’s

Whether you are looking for Jensen beach restaurants or restaurants in Vero Beach, you’ve got to come see us at one of our six locations. We are excited to announce that Mulligan’s Beach House will be coming to Singer Island in 2018! Whether you visit us on Singer Island or at any other of our seafood restaurant locations, make sure you do it soon! That way, you don’t need to search for “fresh seafood near me” anymore. You can just stop by Mulligan’s full-service tropical restaurant!

Waterfront Restaurants | More Than Just Seafood At Mulligan’s!

In our previous post, we took a look at some of the “landfood” items on our predominantly seafood-heavy menu that we consistently hear good things about from our customers. Of course, we enjoy them as well. It helps having such a wide variety of options to choose from, so even our staff doesn’t get tired of the same handful of dishes when they dine in! In today’s post, we will continue with the last one by carrying on highlighting non-seafood dishes. Specifically, we will look at dinner menu items, cocktails, and more. Keep reading if you are interested in learning more about one of the top waterfront and tropical restaurants in Southeastern Florida!

Entrees

  • T-bone Steak – 16 ounces of succulent, grass-fed beef. It’s juicy, it could probably feed three people, and it’s all for you. Add mushrooms and onions if you choose. We make a good steak, it’s that simple. Try our 10 ounce Top Sirloin Steak, on which you can add bleu cheese and bacon…rather, on which you should add bleu cheese and bacon.
  • Caribbean Jerk Chicken – If you are a fan of jerk chicken, this will be right up your alley. An incredible array of spices makes the chicken fizzle in your mouth, and it’s topped with pico de gallo for a refreshing balance.
  • Baby Back Ribs – A timeless, American classic, done right by Mulligan’s. Choose from a full rack or a half-slab. They come with fresh veggies. If you order them, be prepared to share them with your whole party, because they smell incredible, and taste even better.
  • Beach House Surf N Turf – We thought it would be a good idea to give you the best of both worlds when it comes to seafood and landfood. We offer the 10 ounce sirloin steak with a skewer of jumbo blackened shrimp, bursting with full flavor.

Pastas

  • Chicken Broccoli Alfredo – You’ve had it before perhaps, but you probably haven’t had it made by the chefs at Mulligan’s. We add our own twist to the classic dish. Keep in mind that all of our seafood, pasta, steaks, and other entrees come with soup, house salad, or caesar salad. We also have gluten-free options available to you upon request.

Drinks

We offer $6 daily drinks, with a rotating special depending on the day of the week.

  • Monday – Margarita
  • Tuesday – Pina Colada
  • Wednesday – Daiquiri
  • Thursday – Frozen Rum Runner
  • Friday – Long Island Ice Tea
  • Saturday – Mojito

But our drink menu goes well beyond that. We offer 3 different mojitos (Classic, Blueberry, Cucumber), 4 martinis (classic, chocolate raspberry, pomegranate, key lime), and an excellent collection of white and red wine.

In terms of cocktails, we offer our house-made sangria, along with many other refreshing beverages. We even have champagne, if you are here to celebrate!

Private Dining

At our restaurant in Vero Beach, we have a private, oceanfront room that holds a maximum of 40 guests. If you are interested in a corporate event, a party, or even a family reunion meal, our private dining experience is classy, fun, and comes with delicious food and drinks.

More Than Just Seafood: Highlighting Mulligan’s “Landfood” Breakfast And Lunch Items

At Mulligan’s Beach House Bar & Grill, we have a variety of incredible seafood options to choose from. As native Floridians, our owners and operators understand the difference between your average seafood restaurant and a waterfront restaurant that is truly unique. The latter category is exactly what we’ve sought to create here at Mulligan’s Beach House Bar & Grill. And although we offer flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth selections of Mahi, lobster, shrimp, clams, tuna, salmon, and more, we understand that there is more to providing a great tropical restaurant experience than simply having great seafood. But, it doesn’t hurt.

So what do we think goes into creating a fantastic dining experience for breakfast, lunch, or dinner? That’s an excellent question, we are so pleased you asked! We believe, in addition to great seafood, it starts with the atmosphere. That’s why we make a point to make you feel right at home the moment you walk into one of our fine local seafood restaurants. It’s always a great time at Mulligan’s, whether you join us for happy hour after your work day or are stopping by the area looking for a family restaurant. We know how to have fun, and with a great range of mixed drinks and other libations to choose from, you are sure to enjoy yourself as well! We have locations in Lake Worth, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Jensen Beach, Stuart, Vero Beach, and Sebastian, and that means that you probably don’t have to drive too far to come see us!

Today’s Topic

So we’ve established that great seafood and a fantastic environment are essential elements for a waterfront restaurant that wants to be taken seriously. Check and check. But the meat and potatoes of today’s post, as the title no doubt already informed you, is about some of our most popular items on the menu that aren’t seafood-based. Read on if you are interested in hearing about some delicious breakfast and lunch items that people rave about here in South Florida!

Breakfast, Lunch, And Dinner

We are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner 365 days a year. No matter what meal you join us for, we want to make sure that everyone finds something on the menu that catches their eye. That’s why we have such a wealth of options of “landfood”, if you will. So while we won’t be listing every single item on our menu that doesn’t come from the ocean, we will give you a quick list of some of our favorites.

Breakfast

  • Breakfast Platter – Sometimes, you need a classic, hearty, American breakfast. We use American diners (the good ones) for inspiration here as you can get two eggs any style, two sausage patties, two bacon strips, home fries, and toast. If you happened to be out sipping on one too many Mai Tais the night before, here is your antidote.
  • Nutella Banana Toast – Everyone likes nutella. This is well known. What is slightly less well known is the fact that Mulligan’s Beach Restaurant has the world’s best Nutella Banana French Toast. Not only do we get the balance just right, but we stuff them inside the toast as well. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, give it a try.
  • Breakfast Burrito – An absolute classic, done right. Choose from sausage, bacon, sour cream, or if you are feeling like a nap after breakfast…all three! Try it on Tuesday to pair it with a $6 Pina Colada!
  • Greek Omelette – We do more than just a classic American-style breakfast. We make a mean Greek Omelette, complete with feta cheese, creamy spinach, and tomatoes. It’s a refreshing way to start your day while still giving you all the calories you need to make it to lunch.
  • Simple & Fit Platter – Not everyone wants to go into a food coma after they eat breakfast, and while we don’t understand such a feeling, we can respect it. That’s why we have the Simple & Fit Platter with scrambled egg whites, rotating fresh fruit, and whole wheat toast to get your day started off right.
  • Fried Chicken Benedict – Okay, we might be getting slightly carried away with all of our breakfast choices, but we can’t help ourselves. And we wanted to feature a southern dish after talking about something so overtly healthy in our Simple & Fit Platter. Our Fried Chicken Benedict comes with two buttermilk biscuits baked to perfection, fried chicken with just the right amount of crunch, and over easy eggs. Top it off with our country sausage gravy, and you’ve got yourself the fixins’ for a rustic twist on a classic breakfast dish.

Appetizers

  • Spinach Artichoke Dip – This is our own house recipe, so we don’t want to give our secrets away. Just try it. You’ll love it. You might even order another one, or two. We won’t judge you.
  • Oh So Cheesey Fries – No need for seafood here, just plenty of cheese, green onions, and bacon. Basically, all we need to do is make you aware of this option, because, really, it speaks for itself.
  • Drunken Onion Rings – These puppies are beer battered and come with our special cajun remoulade to add a southern twist on the classic American appetizer.

We offer many other options, but in the interest of time, you can refer to our menu or just stop on by for a full list! Keep in mind we offer a great many seafood appetizers, like our Calypso Crab Cake, Seafood Trio, and Key West conch Fritters, made with tender queen conch in an herb batter.

Lunch Items

  • Margherita Flatbread – Our flat bread is flavorful and baked perfectly. This simple dish includes basil, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese. Simple, classic, delicious.
  • Chicken Bella Flatbread – if you are looking for a bit more substance on your flatbread, we’ve got just the thing. With grilled chicken, mushrooms, melted goat cheese, tomatoes, and spinach, each bite explodes in your mouth.
  • Mulligan’s Cobb Salad – Cobb salad lovers won’t be disappointed. It’s exactly what you are looking for in a cobb salad. With egg, chicken, guac, bacon, tomato, cheddar and jack cheese, and your favorite dressing, what’s not to love?
  • Texas Burger – We are Floridian through and through, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate another state’s take. This is a burger done right, with BBQ sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese, and a juicy patty…it’s pretty tough to be disappointed.
  • Philly Steak – In keeping with the homages, we also know how to prepare a pretty darn good Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, if we do say so ourselves. With onion rings on top, melted cheese, more onions, mushrooms, and of course, tender steak, it’s one to try if the mood strikes.
  • Our BLT – This is another classic that people who aren’t in a seafood mood will typically enjoy. Keep in mind you can substitute the “B” for turkey or Mahi for just a bit more!
  • Chicken Bella Wrap – Finally, we have the Dr. Marty recommended wrap. Complete with roasted mushrooms, goat cheese, greens, tomatoes, grilled chicken, and a thai ginger wrap, this is one of our customers’ top choices in the lunch department.

Whether you are looking for a family restaurant in Jensen Beach, are searching “fresh seafood near me” into your search bar, or just want to find the best restaurant around you, Mulligan’s Beach House Bar & Grill is worthy of your consideration. While we certainly have a  great seafood menu, we wanted you to be aware of some other options that we are proud to offer at all of our Southeastern Florida locations. In our next post, we will be taking a look at some of our dinner and dessert options that we didn’t have time to highlight today. Keep a look out for that one, and come on down to Mulligan’s the next time you are in the mood to have some great food and a fun time!

Learn What Different Types Of Fish Taste Like And What Pairs Well With Each, Part Two

In part one of this two part series about various fish and their flavor profiles, we only had the time to analyze cod and mahi mahi. That is mostly our fault, as we got a bit caught up highlighting what Mulligan’s has to offer within and beyond the seafood world. With so many things to talk about, we hope that our readers won’t hold it against us for too long. Especially because at the end of this article, we will again highlight a few different features about our beloved waterfront restaurant(s). But for now, just know that our locations of Vero Beach, Jensen Beach, and Lake Worth all have fantastic seafood and more, with each being a family restaurant where anyone and everyone can find a little bit of fun and a whole lot of great food.

Today we will continue our discussion on our favorite fish, most of which you can find at, you guessed, it Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill. Let’s get going!

The Grouper Fish

Grouper are part of perhaps the largest family of fish in the world, the sea bass family. If you’ve had Grouper before, it’s very likely it was either Gag or Red Grouper, as those are the most commonly caught. As you may have guessed, the grouper fish is very common within Florida seas, in addition to being found in the Gulf of Mexico, Central America, the Mid-Atlantic States, and even South America.

Taste And Preparation

With a mild, sweet flavor, somewhere in between seabass and halibut, grouper ends up cooking to be more firm than many other kinds of fish. Yet at the same time it locks its moisture in well, with big flakes and a well-rounded flavor.

Typically, chefs prefer to cook with the Red Grouper, but if prepared correctly, any kind of grouper can dazzle the taste buds. A classic southern method of preparation is to blacken it. Blackening it on a grill (what we recommend if you are new to this technique), and adding the classic sides of black beans and rice makes this a treat the whole family can enjoy. Plus, it doesn’t take all day to cook or clean up!

Whatever your method of choice, a good rule of thumb (along with many other kinds of fish, to be fair) is to cook for ten minutes for every inch of thickness, with the oven temperature being somewhere between 400-450 degree F. Substitutions for grouper include red snapper and Mahi Mahi.

And while we are talking about the Florida Grouper, try our own entree, and get Fresh Florida Grouper either blackened or grilled, topped with our in-house Pineapple Salsa. If you are feeling like grouper but you still want some lobster and crab at the same time (greedy, but we can’t blame you), try our Crabby Grouper dish. It comes with a Fresh Grouper filet, topped with lobster sauce and paired with a delicious crab cake. If we are talking about bites to remember, this is certainly one that will rank highly on your all-time list.

Ahi Tuna

Also referred to as Yellowfin and Bigeye Tuna, Ahi Tuna is most commonly found in Hawaii. It has a similar flavor profile to Albacore Tuna or Salmon, yet is often served rare in order to maintain its natural distinctiveness. Another reason to serve this fish rare is that it dries out quickly and is easy to overcook. So if you are going to ride that edge, try to get it with just a touch of pink remaining in the middle.

Taste And Preparation

Ahi tuna is both mild and firm, like many other first. But unlike some kinds, it also has a full and even hearty flavor. You can prepare Ahi Tuna in a variety of ways, but three of the most common are as follows.

  • Sear Your Tuna – heat a pan until it is very hot with oil (pro-tip; coconut oil has a very high smoke point, and is wildly healthy for you in a variety of ways), slap your tuna steaks on the pan, and cooked, uncovered, for between 6 and 9 minutes. Flip once halfway through, and don’t forget your spices, which we will get to later.
  • Bake Your Tuna – quite simply, stick it on a greased baking sheet in an oven at 450 degree for around five minutes. Boom town.
  • Grill Your Tuna – brush your tuna with oil, and grill on the highest heat settings you’ve got, for around 4 minutes on each side.

Spices And Sides

Whichever method you prefer, Ahi Tuna goes great with dill, tarragon, parsley, fennel, rosemary, and even goes great when marinated in soy sauce. Play around with a couple of different combinations to find out which one you prefer. In terms of sides and wine-pairing, our ideal meal to go with Ahi Tuna includes roasted potatoes, a leafy salad, and a Chardonnay. If, however, you are looking to go towards the rare side of preparation, allow us to do the heavy lifting by trying our Blackened Seared Tuna. Once you’ve tried that at Mulligan’s, it might be hard to convince you to try some of our other great menu items at any one of our beach restaurants!

On Our Next Episode

We initially started this series as not a series, but just a one-off about a few of our favorite kinds of fish, some of which we serve here at Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill. Then, once we got in the weeds a little bit, decided to make a two part series out of it. Now, we’ve realized we have yet to discuss lobster, crabs, or shrimp! We can’t exclude those, so next time we will be talking about those mouthwatering crustaceans.

But whether you are a seafood fan or not, we want you to stop on by any one of our 6 Mulligan’s tropical restaurant locations. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner 365 days a year, you can try our omelets, burgers, salads, french toast, nachos, onion rings, quesadillas, cheese steaks, sandwiches, soups, pastas, cocktails, wines, martinis, and much more. Try out these options and more at South Florida’s top restaurant, Mulligan’s!

Learn What Different Types Of Fish Taste Like And What Pairs Well With Each

When it comes to tropical restaurants in southern Florida, Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill represents an incredible option for people looking to have a great time while enjoying a variety of seafood and more. When we say more, we thought we might say “landfood”, but that probably would throw people off, and take away from our primary focus, which is seafood, seafood, and more seafood. Again, we have many other options, but for the purposes of this article, we are going to highlight various types of fish, many of which you can find at your local top seafood restaurant, Mulligan’s. Not only will we describe what each fish tastes like and how to prepare it, but also what kind of supplemental food and wine will pair well with each fish type described.

But before we dive into today’s topic, allow us to briefly describe our passion for quality seafood and providing it to locations that include Jensen Beach, Lake Worth, and Vero Beach. In addition to being a family restaurant that kids will enjoy, we offer a little bit of everything that most anyone can enjoy, from expertly made cocktails during happy hour, private parties and hosted events, and an incredible atmosphere on the waterfront. So the next time you find yourself searching for a great “waterfront restaurant near me”, for instance, Mulligan’s should be high on your list of priorities to check out!

A Quality Seafood Restaurant

But back to the quality seafood we mentioned. Having been around the South Florida region since 1997, that goes to show that we are at least doing something right to stick around this long. But just getting by has never been our style. We much prefer excellence to the status-quo, which is why we are proud to be a full-service, family-oriented, seafood restaurant that is open everyday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – 365 days a year. With a world-famous monster fish fry, plenty of big-screen TVs to watch the game and enjoy a cold one, or just flat out have a great tasting, freshly caught plate of delicious fish while you enjoy the company of loved ones. We make a point to create a lively atmosphere (within reason) with that classic Floridian hospitality. From the top down, we have a passion for high quality seafood and world-class service.

Hopefully you will excuse that pseudo-rant about what makes our seafood restaurants so great. Sometimes we don’t know when to stop once we get going on what Mulligan’s has to offer families and other people looking for a great time. But we digress. As promised, let’s take a look at some common, and uncommon fish, what their flavor profile looks like, and more!

Cod Fish

Let’s start with a more commonly prepared and consumed fish – often called the chicken of the sea. It has received that nickname due to its mild taste and flaky qualities. Although there are two distinct kinds of cod, Pacific and Atlantic, you will typically see them marketed by seafood restaurants and supermarkets as “Scrod Cod”, Icelandic Cod, or even Lingcod, with the latter not even being an actual type of cod. Rather than Scrod and Icelandic being nominal replacements for Pacific and Atlantic, Scrod Cod is actually a term which denotes a smaller cod, usually under 2 ½ pounds. Less intriguingly, Icelandic Cod simply refers to cod that is caught near Iceland.

While both Atlantic and Pacific Cods have a mild flavor and are considered lean, the most notable difference between the two kinds is that Pacific Cod is less firm, chiefly because it has more moisture than its sister kind to the east.

Preparation

We figure many of you are familiar with cod and that it is usually breaded or battered. If you have ever been to England, you will find that cod is used in their classic fish and chips recipes all over the place. But ultimately, you can saute, steam, fry, bake, or broil cod with little fuss. With a mild flavor, cod represents a great platform for supplemental flavors and seasoning, such as tartar or cocktail sauce. If you are in the mood for such a whitefish fish and chips dish, try our Monster Fish and Chips plate over here at any of our Mulligan’s seafood grill locations! And in terms of pairing, we are going to keep this one fairly simple. Beer. Try it with beer, like a good lager. It’s absolutely fantastic.

Mahi Mahi

One of our most popular kinds of fish we use to prepare a variety of dishes at our tropical restaurants is Mahi Mahi. If you’ve tried this kind of fish before, you may be surprised by its inherent heartiness – to the point where you might not want to go back to try other types of lighter fish. As Kevin James explained to his wife in an episode of The King of Queens (excuse us if we date ourselves here), “I just found out there is a fish that tastes like meat. I’m going to eat that.” We can’t blame you, Kevin. And despite playing a fictional character while he said that, we are confident that if Kevin ever came down to Lake Worth or Jensen Beach, he would be delighted by our Fried Mahi Mahi Fingers or our Fried Mahi Sandwich, which is perfectly prepared to be golden brown, with just the right amount of crisp.

Nutritional Value

But back to the details. In addition to tasting great, Mahi Mahi brings an exceptional range of nutritional value to the table. It’s a great source of protein, contains less saturated fat than many of its fish counterparts, has low sodium (despite being a saltwater fish), is rich in OMega 3, and contains Niacin, vitamin b12, selenium, and more!

Taste

Surprisingly, many people have never tried Mahi Mahi. When people learn that Mahi Mahi is a sustainable fish, meaning it can’t be over-fished, many are encouraged by that fact alone to try it out. And when they do, they quickly learn what all the hype is about. The blend of mild sweetness with its capacity to mix with other flavors is second to none in the fish world. In Hawaii, where much of the world’s Mahi Mahi is caught, they recommend eating it fresh, which is an assessment with which we concur. But you can grill it, saute it, broil it, put some mango salsa with a macadamia nut crust to make it really pop, or try it fried on grilled rye bread with Swiss cheese, cole slaw, and thousand island dressing for an awesome take on a classic American sandwich! By the way, you can find the latter at any Mulligan’s Beach House location.

Our Tropical Restaurant

While we’ve highlighted just two of our favorite kinds of fish, do not fear! We’ve just decided to make this a two part series, so we can talk about more fish and their flavor profiles in our next post. This one was just too much fun, and with so much information to share about each kind of fish, we look forward to the next one.

Like we mentioned above, however, we are much more than just a simple seafood restaurant, although we do take a lot of pride in how we prepare our fish. With crab cakes, cheesey fries, firecracker shrimp, lobster flatbreads, a seafood bisque, and a beach house garden salad, we have a lot to offer in the seafood department alone. When you consider we have a full line of breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and drink items to choose from as well, you begin to understand what makes Mulligan’s Beach House one of the top seafood and beach restaurants in the area. Check out any one of our six locations in Vero Beach, Lake Worth, Jensen Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Stuart, or Sebastian. We would love to show you a great time!

Highlighting Our Private Dining Rooms And Hosted Events

Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill is one of the most famous South Florida seafood restaurant(s) for good reason. With locations peppered throughout Southern Florida in communities like Jensen Beach, Vero Beach, and Lake Worth, Mulligan’s brings a unique blend of family fun, incredible seafood, a variety of menu items, and great atmospheres with breathtaking views. It’s for that reason that we have a fantastic blend of locals and people from out of town coming into our local seafood restaurants. And after all, a great way to learn about which restaurants are the best in an area is to figure out where the locals are eating, and follow suit. If you follow that logic (we would recommend doing so), Mulligan’s is one of the most popular restaurants in the Palm Beach and South Florida area amongst local Floridians!

Today’s post is going to depart from our previous three in that we will be highlighting our hosted events and private dining packages and features. But keep in mind that people with large, loud groups, are just as welcome as a couple looking for a fun date night with great cocktails and a tropical ambiance to boot. And of course, we pride ourselves on being a local kid-friendly restaurant. So don’t fall into the trap of thinking that just because you (or one of your little ones) may not enjoy seafood in particular that you won’t enjoy yourself at Mulligan’s. There is something for everyone here, whether you are looking for a great mixed drink, a fantastic dessert, appetizer, or some of the best mahi mahi you have ever tried. So without further adieu, let’s begin to take a look at a few of the most unique elements we at Mulligan’s are excited to share with you!

How We Started

Founded in 1997, Mulligan’s was brought into existence by George Hart, a 30 year restaurant professional. Starting with just one beach restaurant, now George, with JPB Capital Partners, have expanded to six restaurants, each with their own eye catching view of the water. Ever since he started the Mulligan’s concept, George has been dedicated to creating a culture that pervades every staff member, whether it’s George himself or a host or a chef in the back of house. That culture is to have fun, and make sure all our customers are having fun and enjoying themselves, too! As true native Floridians, George and the rest of us understand the essential ingredients of a top-notch seafood restaurant; great food, friendly service, unbelievable views, and a clean, fun, happy environment! You’ll get all those things and more when you come to Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill!

Private Dining

Interested in having an awesome, private birthday party, right on the beach, where you can drink cocktails, cool off, and enjoy incredible ocean views? Who wouldn’t, right? But birthday parties are not all we can accommodate in our semi-private banquet rooms. The best part about working with Mulligan’s for a private event (like a corporate event, for instance) is that you can be as involved in the planning process as you see fit. We pride ourselves on helping you from start to finish, with special attention to not overstep our bounds in the creative and planning process! So if you would like us to handle the majority of the planning, just let us know! We are happy to customize a private event for you. Here are the specifics based on our locations:

  • Vero Beach – a private oceanfront room that can comfortably accommodate 40 guests
  • Jensen Beach – although we don’t have a private room in our Jensen Beach tropical restaurant location, our main dining room easily seats 25-30 guests.
  • Lake Worth – Our Lake Worth location actually has two separate private rooms, with one able to seats 40 guests and the other a patio that accommodates 50 guests.

Our Banquet Menu

Not only do we have a skilled staff and a wonderful atmosphere for hosted events, but we also have a specially crafted banquet menu for just these occasions.

With a unique breakfast menu, three select options of beach house lunches, boxed sandwiches for a more informal event, and a three incredible dinner packages (with steak, mahi mahi, steak, fried fish, seared tuna, caribbean jerk chicken, crab legs, lobster tail…you get the idea) and a great selection of hor D’oeuvres at our Vero Beach seafood restaurant, each person at your event will find something they can call scrumptious!

Vero Beach’s hosted events menu are not set in stone, so if you would like to customize a menu for your select event, we would be more than happy to accommodate that request! Keep in mind that full bar service is available to complement your event.

If you are interested in a hosted event at any of our 6 locations (Sebastian, Vero Beach, Stuart, Jensen Beach, Lake Worth, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea), you can get more information here.

Fun Activities In Lake Worth For The Whole Family

We here at Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill have locations in Lake Worth, Vero Beach, Jensen Beach, Lauderdale by the Sea, Sebastian, and Stuart. Throughout southern and central Florida you can find our wonderful tropical restaurants filled with happy people, including families and kids, having a great time eating fantastic food.

In our previous two posts, we outlined some of the fun things to do in Vero Beach and Jensen Beach. The two beach communities have so many different activities to offer that it was difficult to whittle our list down to a manageable size. In today’s post, which is dedicated to outlining activities in Lake Worth, we have a similar problem on our hands. That said, let’s dive into some of the exciting events and hidden gems that Lake Worth offers tourists and locals alike.

Palm Beach Bass Fishing

If you have any interest in fishing whatsoever, you are not going to want to miss the bass fishing that can be found on Palm Beach’s wonderful lakes. The butterfly peacock bass are a sight to behold in their own right, but when you add a little sport to the mix, then you really are cooking up a good time.

Comfortably aboard a 21 foot fishing boat, you’ll have a captain who knows Palm Beach’s lakes like the back of their hand. And if you have members of your party worried about being compelled to fish (or getting wet), have no fear. There is no pressure here, only good times. Likewise, if you are an experienced angler or are a first timer, your captain will cater to what you need. After all, it’s your trip! And by the way, if you want to skip the catching portion of your seafood dinner, come on by Mulligan’s in Lake Worth! We have some of the best Mahi Mahi in all of Florida!

A Farmer’s Market On The Beach

If fresh air, fresh vegetables, and fresh water sound like a good use of a day to you, then Lake Worth’s Farmer’s Market might be worth checking out, should you be visiting the Palm Beach region any time soon. The farmer’s market is right on the water, with a small town feel.

As one reviewer put it in her online review of the market, the market has “fresh produce and beautiful surroundings! What a lovely idea to have a farmers market between the intercoastal waterway and the beach! If you are the type of person who wants to get in and out quickly, you are in luck as this is one of the smaller markets where you still have a good assortment of stands and be able to get all your shopping done in a few minutes. Fresh breads, farm fresh eggs, organic vegetables and fruits and much more, make this a delightful place to shop.”

Talk about a glowing review! Lake Worth’s Farmer’s Market is definitely worth a visit to get some local flavor.

Downtown Lake Worth

Speaking of things to do in town, let’s talk about Lake Worth’s downtown for a minute. If you are a fan of coffee shops, boutique shopping, food trucks, live music, quality seafood restaurants (like Mulligan’s), and fun events like sidewalk chalk painting and face painting, this is a downtown right for you.

Another aspect of Lake Worth is that it has a unique, almost quirky vibe to it. As Susan C., of Georgia, put it: “Fun and Funky. It lives up to ‘Keep Lake Worth Weird’. One of the reasons we bought in Lakeworth is the Fun and Funky factor. There is not the typical polished corporate retail and the people are Very welcoming. There is a variety of eateries which are all unique and delicious. Many great festivals and activities year round. Worth a visit for certain!”

Nice pun, Susan! And we agree 100 percent with Susan. Downtown has a little bit of fun for everyone, so it’s perfect if you are alone, a couple, or are going with a family!

Rapids Water Park

Given a ⅘ rating by Travelocity, you probably are going to want to cool off at Lake Worth’s water park of choice, Rapids Water Park, the largest water park in all of South Florida! With 42 different water slides to choose from, the kids are certain to have a good time. While they are busy screaming their heads off and having a great time, you can finally slow down, unwind, and let the sun kiss your skin. The water park is 30 acres across, and boasts a variety of rides and activities, like the splash gymnastics at Alligator Alley.

Of course, no water park is complete without a lazy river and a gigantic (25,000 square foot!) wave pool. Located just a few miles north of Lake Worth, this is a family activity you don’t want to miss out on!

Eco Tours

There are plenty of opportunities to experience nature where the land meets the sea at Lake Worth. And if you are a person who likes to be a bit more active while being a part of nature (sorry, anglers), you can take an eco tour by kayaking or paddle boarding around Lake Worth!

And don’t worry if you have never paddle boarded before, because Paddleboard Connection has experienced, down-to-earth instructors who love showing newbies the ropes. Take sunset tours, full moon tours, and guided tours, and join so many others partaking the fastest growing watersport in the world!

Here is what one of their customers had to say about their paddleboarding tour with Paddleboard Connection: “Absolutely perfect paddle boarding. We came into town for 3 days and called/texted Paddleboard Connection last minute and Vivian was able to work is into her schedule. She was so kind to us and gave excellent instruction before getting on the boards. She was knowledgeable about both The history of Paddle boarding and the area! We just loved getting to know her while relaxing on the water!”

Clearly, if you are on the adventurous side, this is a Lake Worth attraction that is worthy of consideration!

Guided Segway Tour Of Deerfield Beach

If you’d rather get a lay of the land…on the land, something the whole family can enjoy without working up too much of a sweat is the segway tour of Deerfield Beach. Based in Boca Raton, you’ll experience incredible views from the peaceful vantage point of a segway. The coast is truly a sight worth seeing, and better yet, groups get to see the famous “Al Capone Island”, along with a host of other local hidden gems the Palm Beach area has to offer. And if you are worried about operating the segway, fear not, because their instructors are calm, experienced, and will help you out! It’s a low intensity tour, so get ready to relax while you enjoy the wonderful Atlantic Coast.

The Crown Jewel Of Lake Worth

You probably could have guessed this one! Located on 10 Ocean Blvd., Lake Worth, FL., Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill is a full-service restaurant that goes above and beyond “just seafood”. A kid-friendly, family restaurant, everyone will find something to enjoy on our extensive menu.

Found within the Lake Worth Casino Building and renovated Beach Complex, the casino is an attraction in its own right, as it has a classic 1920s feel. And if you are planning on coming with kids, keep in mind that there is no gambling at the new complex. Our community just wanted to keep the name “casino” to remind everyone about Lake Worth’s history. With happy hour everyday from 1-7pm, and a great line of desserts, appetizers, land food, and cocktails, you won’t regret you stopped by one of South Florida’s top restaurants! Come on by Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill, and come get yourself a flavorful menu item that is sure to surprise and delight.

Fun Activities In Vero Beach For The Whole Family

Vero Beach is a lovely beach community on the eastern Florida coast and is part of Indian River County. Vero Beach is a popular destination for many looking to explore Florida’s atlantic coast doing family-based activities.

Vero Beach has something to offer for everyone, not only families. Among one of the options that is both kid friendly and adult friendly has to be Mulligan’s Beach House. One of Southern Florida’s most popular waterfront restaurants, our Vero Beach location combines incredible seafood with a whale of a good time for the whole family. Our exciting, tropical restaurant goes way beyond only serving seafood, as we have a full-stack menu which offers a variety of meal options, from breakfast to delicious landfood, like cheeseburgers.

You were promised a post about a variety of Vero Beach family activities, and by golly you are going to get it. Read on if you are interested in planning a vacation to Vero Beach and the Atlantic coast. But if you are a local looking to rediscover your own community, we think you might enjoy these suggestions too.

Nature And Wildlife Tours

If you and/or your family is a fan of the outdoors, fresh air, and wild animals, then you will want to check out at least one of these two boating tour options. First up is Captain Bob’s Airboat Adventure Tour, which takes you on a speed boat through the swamp to get up close and personal with wild animals including turtles, birds, and alligators! As one reviewer noted, “A must do! Very simply, Captain Bob’s Airboat tour was the highlight of our vacation! The boat, headphones, seating, etc. are all top notch, and Captain Bob couldn’t have been more friendly or accommodating. Captain Bob takes all safety precautions and has a great command of his vessel. My wife and I brought our 4 and 3 year old daughters and would do so again without hesitation. Before the trip, we were guessing we may see a few alligators. I think we saw 50. The bird watching was also awesome. We will be back!” Clearly, you don’t want to miss out on this adventure boating tour!

The second boating tour we would like to highlight is the Marsh Beast Airboat Tour. You’ll get to experience the beautiful Blue Cypress Recreation Area, where you’ll get to see alligators from a close, yet safe vantage point. Winning the Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and boasting a fantastic 97 percent “Excellent” (Five Stars) rating out of 189 reviews, this is truly one of the very top activities in Vero Beach. As one reviewer who gave the tour five stars observed, “Reviews were right, this is a awesome tour with Captain Kenny. Very knowledgeable about the area, birds, history, and where the gators are hiding. Large boat, comfortable seats, headsets are very good.”

Vero Beach Inshore Fishing

Looking for that once-in-a-lifetime trophy fish you can tell your friends about for years? You might be interested in checking out getting a fishing tour lined up in an inshore flats boat with an experienced captain on hand. Not only that but the unit’s two stages are home to almost 300 performances each year! All performances are produced in-house as well, with actors, designers, and directors being brought in from New York. This way, they combine local flavor with the professionalism of the big city. If all that wasn’t enough to convince you, they offer performances that range from the Comedy Zone, Distinguished, Lecturer Series, all the way to Children’s Theatre. There’s something for everyone at Riverside Theatre.
